We are discussing the theory of Realistic Group Conflict. A basic premise of this theory is that prejudice arises out of real or perceived conflict between groups over scarce or finite resources. Two such resources are education and jobs. As noted in class, there are only so many seats available for freshmen at selective universities and, of course, there are only so many good-paying jobs. This week’s question concerns the policies of affirmative action in education and minority hiring. In your opinion, what role should governmental policies play in guaranteeing equal opportunity for all? are the of government action or inaction?  In thinking about this crucial issue, consider whether these policies are beneficial or harmful, and for whom.  Feel free to use personal examples to you make your points, but don’t use any names or other personally identifying information.
