IPE refers to educational activities that involve students from different healthcare professions learning together to promote collaboration and teamwork (Reeves et al., 2013). IPC, on the other hand, involves healthcare professionals working together to deliver patient-centered care (WHO, 2010). Implementing IPE and IPC in healthcare settings has shown significant improvements in teamwork, communication, and patient outcomes (Reeves et al., 2013).

Another evidence-based practice for enhancing teamwork is the use of team training programs. These programs aim to improve the skills and knowledge of healthcare providers in working effectively within a team. Team training programs often involve simulations, role-playing, and debriefing sessions to enhance communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills (Salas et al., 2018). Studies have shown that these programs can improve teamwork, reduce medical errors, and increase patient satisfaction (Weaver et al., 2014; Hughes et al., 2017).

Plan for Enhancing Teamwork

Based on the literature review, the following plan is proposed to enhance teamwork between RNs and PCTs in the medical surgical unit:

1. Implement Interprofessional Education and Collaboration: Instituting IPE activities and IPC initiatives can bridge gaps between different care providers and promote a collaborative approach to patient care. This can involve organizing joint training sessions, workshops, and seminars that bring together RNs and PCTs to learn and work together. These activities should focus on improving interprofessional communication skills, fostering mutual respect, and understanding each other’s roles and responsibilities.

2. Develop Team Training Program: A comprehensive team training program should be implemented to improve teamwork skills among RNs and PCTs. This program can include simulation exercises, role-playing scenarios, and debriefing sessions to practice effective communication, coordination, and problem-solving. Training should address the specific challenges faced by RNs and PCTs in their daily workflow and emphasize the importance of teamwork in providing quality care.

3. Establish Clear Roles and Responsibilities: Ambiguity in roles and responsibilities can lead to confusion and conflict among team members. The unit should establish clear guidelines and expectations for the roles of RNs and PCTs, defining their respective responsibilities and areas of collaboration. This can be achieved through the development of job descriptions, checklists, and protocols that outline the tasks and goals for each care provider.

4. Improve Communication Channels: Effective communication is essential for teamwork. The unit should establish clear communication channels and protocols to facilitate information sharing between RNs and PCTs.
