As a nursing student, I have been exposed to various perspectives and frameworks in the field of nursing. After careful consideration, the framework that most closely aligns with my beliefs is the Person-Centered Care framework. Person-Centered Care is a holistic approach that places the individual at the center of healthcare decisions and focuses on their unique needs, values, and preferences.

This framework resonates with me because I believe that every individual is unique and deserves to be treated as such. Person-Centered Care emphasizes the importance of building a therapeutic relationship between the nurse and the patient, which allows for individualized care and shared decision-making. This approach recognizes the importance of the patient’s voice in their healthcare journey, promoting autonomy and empowerment.

In applying the Nurse of the Future: Nursing Core Competencies into my daily nursing practice, I plan to integrate all ten competencies. These competencies provide guidance for nurses to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. I will now describe how I plan to apply each of these competencies in my practice:

1. Patient-Centered Care: I will prioritize the needs, values, and preferences of my patients and involve them in their care plan. For example, I will actively listen to their concerns, involve them in decision-making, and advocate for their preferences.

2. Teamwork and Collaboration: I will work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, recognizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in providing comprehensive care. For instance, I will actively participate in multidisciplinary rounds, contribute to care conferences, and communicate effectively with other team members.

3. Evidence-Based Practice: I will base my nursing interventions on the best available evidence. This means constantly seeking out and critically appraising the latest research in order to provide the most effective and up-to-date care possible.

4. Quality Improvement: I will actively participate in quality improvement initiatives. This involves identifying areas for improvement, implementing evidence-based changes, and evaluating the impact of these changes on patient outcomes.

5. Safety: I will prioritize patient safety by following established protocols and standards. This includes measures such as proper hand hygiene, medication safety, and infection control practices.

6. Informatics and Technology: I will utilize technology and informatics to enhance patient care and communication. This may involve using electronic health records to access patient information, using telehealth platforms for virtual visits, and engaging in continuous learning to stay up-to-date with technological advancements.

7. Professionalism: I will uphold the ethical standards of the nursing profession, demonstrating integrity, compassion, and respect for all individuals. This includes maintaining confidentiality, advocating for patients’ rights, and striving for continuous professional development.

8. Leadership: I will actively engage in leadership roles to improve patient outcomes and promote a positive work environment. This may involve mentoring junior colleagues, participating in interdisciplinary committees, and advocating for nursing practice at the organizational level.

9. Systems-Based Practice: I will understand and navigate the complexities of the healthcare system in order to advocate for patients and ensure the delivery of safe and efficient care. This may involve coordinating care transitions, addressing healthcare disparities, and understanding health policy.

10. Professional Development: I will engage in continuous learning and professional development to enhance my knowledge and skills. This may involve attending conferences, pursuing further education, and participating in research or quality improvement projects.

By applying these core competencies into my daily nursing practice, I aim to provide high-quality, person-centered care to my patients. These competencies serve as a guide for nursing practice and highlight the importance of professionalism and continuous growth in the field of nursing.
