Complete this week’s assigned readings, chapters 39-43. After completing the readings, post a short reflection, approximately 1 paragraph in length, discussing your thoughts, opinions, questions or concerns about one or several of the specific topics covered in the textbook readings. Identify which MSN Essential most relates to your selected topic in your discussion. As a reminder, no scholarly sources are required and students do not have to reply to a classmate’s original post.  I’M a Family Nurse Practitioner student.

Reflection on Chapters 39-43

After completing the assigned readings in chapters 39-43, I found myself particularly interested in the topic of healthcare policy and its implications for nurse practitioners. The discussion around the role of nurse practitioners in policy advocacy and the importance of understanding the healthcare system resonated with me as I consider my future career as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). The reading emphasized the need for NPs to actively engage in policy development and implementation to promote equitable healthcare access and quality outcomes for all patients.

One of the key MSN Essentials that relates to this topic is Essential VIII: Advanced Nursing Practice. This essential calls for nurses to engage in active policy development to influence healthcare outcomes at the institutional, local, state, and national levels. As advanced practice nurses, especially FNPs, we have a unique perspective and expertise that can contribute to shaping healthcare policy to better meet the needs of our patients and communities. This essential encourages us to advocate for policies that improve access to care, promote health equity, and address the social determinants of health.

I also appreciated the discussion on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its impact on the healthcare landscape. The reading highlighted the expansion of health insurance coverage and the implications for healthcare providers, including NPs. As a future FNP, it is crucial for me to understand the intricacies of the ACA and its potential effects on access to care, reimbursement models, and the overall delivery of healthcare services. The MSN Essential that aligns with this topic is Essential IX: Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practice. This essential emphasizes the importance of understanding healthcare policies and systems to provide safe, high-quality, and cost-effective care. By staying informed about changes in policy, I can better navigate the healthcare system and advocate for my patients to ensure they receive optimal care.

Another topic that caught my attention was the discussion on interprofessional collaboration and teamwork in healthcare. The reading emphasized the importance of effective teamwork in providing patient-centered care and improving outcomes. As an FNP, I will be working closely with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, nurses, and allied health personnel, to provide comprehensive care to my patients. It is crucial for me to develop strong communication and collaboration skills to foster effective teamwork and enhance the quality of care. The MSN Essential that relates to this topic is Essential II: Organizational and Systems Leadership. This essential emphasizes the need for nurses to collaborate with other healthcare professionals, utilize effective communication strategies, and work as part of an interprofessional team to improve patient outcomes.

In conclusion, the readings in chapters 39-43 provided valuable insights into healthcare policy, interprofessional collaboration, and the impact of the ACA on the practice of nurse practitioners. As an FNP student, these topics hold great significance for my future practice. Understanding healthcare policy, advocating for policy changes, engaging in interprofessional collaboration, and staying informed about healthcare systems are all crucial components of advanced nursing practice. By incorporating the MSN Essentials into my practice, I can strive to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centered care that addresses the unique needs of individuals, families, and communities.
